| About Us |
We represent 6,000 men and women in British Columbia and the Yukon. The Labourers Union has been a part of organized Labour in B.C. since September 14, 1937. Members have been involved in all aspects of building this province from the dams for hydro electric power, gas pipelines, mines and roads as well as all types of buildings.
There were four locals of the Labourers' Union in B.C. prior to July 30, 1997. Each Local had the jurisdiction for a specific area and type of work in B.C. The membership of these Locals voted overwhelmingly (87%) to amalgamate into one Local in 1997, that would cover all of B.C. and the Yukon. With the birth of Local 1611, artificial borders were removed making it easier for members, to find work, and better for our contractors.
March 1, 2010, marked an exciting merger for the Labourers' Union as the Dock and Shipyard Workers' Union Local 1204 became members of Local 1611.
Our name -- The Construction and Specialized Workers' Union Local 1611 -- indicates the varied skills of our members. Our union roots are in construction but over the years our organization has branched out to represent workers in other areas. The Local now has members in Health Care, Security, Parking Lots, Cemeteries and related work, Precast Concrete Plants, Janitorial Work, Recycling Plants, Landscaping, Railways, Road Building, Mining and Diamond drilling, Rock related work, Paving, Site Services, and Shipyard Work.
LABOURERS = DIVERSIFIED
