TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

Tunnelling Training Program

Do you want to advance your career and leave your mark on some of the most iconic transportation infrastructure in British Columbia at the same time?


Training PLUS (Professional Labourers’ Union School) has partnered with the Northwest Laborers’ Training Fund in Washington State to offer a comprehensive tunneling program to members of LiUNA! Local 1611. This is an opportunity to gain a solid understanding of safety in tunnel construction, excavation and material handling, and utilities.


Training will take place over 13 days at Local 1611’s facility in Surrey, B.C. and the NLT facility in Satsop, Washington (approximately 50 kilometres west of Olympia).

Cost

All courses are FREE. Local 1611 will also cover accommodation and three meals a day while students are in Washington. Students in British Columbia who must travel more than 75 kilometres one-way to our Surrey training centre may be eligible for additional accommodation. Transportation and wage replacement for students who are currently working will not be covered.

Feb. 6-10 in Surrey and Feb. 14-21 in Satsop, Washington

The maximum capacity for this program is 12 students.

The program consists of 3 courses: SHAFT, Tunnel Rail & Tunnel Utilities


SHAFT (Safety & Health Awareness for Tunneling)

  • Length: 40 hours (8 hrs/day for 5 days)

  • Date: Feb. 6-10

  • Location: Surrey, BC

The SHAFT course provides quality, comprehensive safety training for both new and experienced workers to the industry. This course is primarily classroom-based with the use of materials and mock-ups in class.


Tunnel Rail & Tunnel Utilities

  • Length: 80 hours for both courses (10 hrs/day for 8 days)

  • Date: Feb. 14-21

  • Location: Satsop, WA

Tunnel Rail

Students will learn about site rules, materials and tools, vocabulary of rail materials and tools, review job hazard analysis, procedures and equipment used in the assembling and disassembling of a tunnel rail. The course includes construction of a narrow-gauge railroad to demonstrate for students how to haul out debris and how to bring workers and materials into the tunnel.


Tunnel Utilities

Students will learn how to construct various utilities, including electrical systems, fire protection and suppression systems, lighting systems, communication systems, ventilation systems and walkways.
